I suggest some sort of waterproof container for your kit. Mine is about 3 L in size. 

I keep the medical "convenience" items in an outer pocket that is easy to access so I don't have to tear through my kit because of a common problem such as a blister. Or irritated eyes. Or someone wanting a mild pain killer. Or a small cut or scrape. You get the idea.

Yes, Chapstick is necessary. Try going on a 4 day trip with constant wind and rain with no chapstick. It sucks. By the time I found some chapstick, I almost thought it was an emergency...
